Stretched out in a flowering meadow, a black-and-white cat looks sideways, tail trailing behind it, in Bruno Liljefors' Cat on a Flowery Meadow. Yellow blooms, pink clover-like heads and white daisies surround it, a dandelion clock rises beside its face, and a brown shed roof peeks out behind.

Cat on a Flowery Meadow was completed in 1887 and is held by the Nationalmuseum. The meadow fills the canvas from edge to edge, its flowers rendered as dense dabs of colour. The cat sits off to one side, its gaze directed beyond the frame, leaving the viewer to wonder what it is watching.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
