Dry grass on a spring bog glows gold and beige beneath grey-green shrubs. Several black grouse males circle one another with red combs raised, and two of them fan out their white undertail feathers. A brown hen watches from the side. The scene is Bruno Liljefors's painting Blackgame in Springtime.

Blackgame in Springtime dates from 1907 and belongs to the collection of the Nationalmuseum. In Swedish it is called Orrspel i mossen, the lek on the bog. Notice how the hen's brown plumage melts into the dry grass, while the blue-black sheen of the males stands out sharply.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
