Out of a pitch-black background, an August bittersweet vine carries flowers and berries at once. Violet star-shaped blooms point yellow cones downward, and the leaves are edged with purple. A single flower and a halved berry with its seeds sit apart, as on a botanical plate. The most demanding part is the dense berry clusters, where green, orange and red berries hang side by side.

Deep black surrounds the whole plant and fills in as large, unbroken areas. The leaves are built from two greens and a yellow-green in clear patches, while a handful of small accent colours appear in only a few spots.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
