Night-black ground sets off green beech leaves and a gathering of beetles. A stag beetle with red jaws sits at the centre among a black-spotted blue longhorn and violet, green, red and yellow beetles, with spiky chestnut husks showing brown nuts. The most demanding part is the lichen-covered bark, where small grey patches lie close together.

Black fills the gaps between leaves and insects in broad areas, and the olive and yellow-green leaves need only a few clear shades. The stag beetle's wide brown wing cases are the roomiest areas. Small accent colours gather in spots, striped antennae and shell highlights.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
