Paint by Numbers Paint Dried Out or Missing? Mix a Replacement Color

5 min read

Missing or dried paint in a paint by numbers kit? Learn how to revive thick paint, mix a replacement color and test the shade safely. A home-mixed color will not be exactly the same as the original, but it can often save small touch-ups and less visible areas.

Quick decision: revive it or mix a new color?

First check the condition of the paint. If it is thick, sticky or slightly clumpy, it may still be usable with a tiny amount of water. If it is hard, rubbery or breaks into dry pieces, mixing a replacement shade is usually the better option.

If the paint is still soft but too thick, see our separate guide on how to thin acrylic paint for paint by numbers. This guide focuses on situations where a shade is missing, has run out or has dried so much that you need a replacement color.

  • Thick but soft paint: add one tiny drop of water, mix thoroughly and wait a moment.
  • Completely dried paint: do not apply grainy paint directly to the canvas. Mix a replacement shade instead.
  • Missing paint in a new kit: contact customer support first. Mixing is emergency help, not a replacement for a support claim.

What do you need for mixing replacement paint?

The easiest method is a small digital scale that measures to at least 0.1 g. This makes the recipe much easier to repeat than measuring by eye. For a small emergency mix, a few grams of paint is usually enough.

  • a small palette, plate or plastic lid for mixing
  • a toothpick, cocktail stick or small palette knife
  • a piece of paper or an invisible edge of the canvas for testing
  • a tiny amount of water only if needed
  • ideally, a digital scale accurate to 0.1 g

If you do not have a scale, use parts. One part can be one equal-sized dab on the end of a toothpick, one small brushload or one drop. The important part is to use the same measuring method for every color and start with a small test batch.

Practical mixing guide

Three steps for measuring, mixing and testing a replacement paint by numbers color
  1. Find the missing color. Check the missing paint number on the canvas or the color chart that came with your kit. If you are using our paints, you can find the closest mix with the paint by numbers color calculator.
  2. Measure or divide into parts. If the recipe says 2 parts color A and 1 part color B, weigh 0.2 g + 0.1 g or use two equal dabs and one equal dab.
  3. Mix until smooth. Pull the paint back and forth on the palette until no streaks remain. Add water only in very small amounts if the paint is too thick.
  4. Make a test swatch. Paint a small line on paper or on an area that will not be visible in the finished project.
  5. Let it dry. Compare the shade only after it has dried. Acrylic paint can look different when wet.
  6. Adjust if needed. If the shade is too dark, add a lighter paint. If it is too cool, warm or bright, make a small change and test again.

If you do not have a scale

Without a scale, the best method is to mix by parts. Do not make a large batch immediately. Start small. For example, use the end of a toothpick: 3 dabs of a light color and 1 dab of a darker color. Write the ratio down before painting, so you can mix more of the same shade if needed.

Without a scale, the result is less precise. Use the mixed paint mainly on small areas, edges, shadows and textured parts. On large flat areas or directly next to the original color, even a small difference is easier to see.

Why will the mixed paint not be exactly the same?

Paint by numbers paints are acrylic paints, and some variation is normal. The same color code can vary slightly between production batches. At home, the result is also affected by measuring method, water amount, drying time, lighting and whether you are matching from a screen or from real dried paint.

If you use a HEX code or a photo as the starting point, remember that a screen color is not the same as dried paint. Screen brightness, camera settings and room lighting can all shift the starting shade. A HEX color is a useful starting point, but the test swatch decides.

When does the Paint Mix Calculator help?

The missing paint mix tool is made for emergency situations where paint from a paintbynumbers.eu kit is missing, dried out or lost. Enter the missing paint code and choose the leftover paints you still have. The calculator suggests the closest mix from those available paints.

With Custom color, you can also choose a HEX color or a shade from your screen. This can help with small touch-ups, personal projects or kits from other brands if you are mixing from our paints. It does not know other brands' color codes or paint ranges.

Common mistakes

  • Painting directly on the canvas without testing. Always test a small amount first.
  • Adding too much water. Too much water weakens coverage and can make the paint transparent.
  • Comparing wet paint to a dry area. Wait until the test swatch has dried.
  • Mixing too little. Make a little extra if you need to touch up several areas.
  • Using an uncertain mix on a large flat area. Emergency mixes work best in small and less critical spots.

Short checklist

  • Try to revive thick paint first if it is still soft.
  • Mix a new shade if the paint is fully dry or missing.
  • Use a scale if you want a repeatable ratio.
  • Without a scale, measure by parts and write the ratio down.
  • Test a small amount and compare it only after it has dried.
  • Use the Paint Mix Calculator for missing paint by numbers colors when you are mixing with our paints.
